General information
What is Palcoyo Mountain?
Palcoyo Mountain is a group of colorful mountains located in the Cusco region of Peru, approximately 4,900 meters above sea level, in the Checacupe district. Its main attraction is the natural bands of color formed by the accumulation of minerals over millions of years.
It’s famous for being a more accessible and less touristy alternative to the Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca). The hike is short and easy, and in addition to the colorful landscape, you can also see a rock forest and views of the Ausangate snow-capped mountain.
History of Palcoyo
The Vilcanota mountain range was formed more than 200 million years ago. During this long formation process, various atmospheric and geographical changes occurred. Millions of years passed before we reached planet Earth as we see it today. It was likely during this period that the rather unusual arrangement of the chemical sediments that give Palcoyo Mountain its color occurred. This coloration phenomenon in the mountains can be seen in more detail in Palcoyo and Vinicunca.
The incredible thing about this phenomenon is that the minerals have naturally arranged themselves in a separation that allows them to be distinguished in lines that border the mountain. These minerals, or sediments, responsible for the coloration, are the following:
- Remains of clay with sand, which gives it a red to pink color.
- Limestone and quartz sediments give it a whitish color.
- Clay with calcium and silicates, giving it a lavender to purple color.
- Pure clay or with few additives of other minerals gives it a red color.
- Soil sediments with ferromagnesian, giving it a green color.
- Calcareous sandstones and sulfur mixtures give it yellowish, golden and even mustard colors.
Mineral or sediment | Colors |
---|---|
Clay remains with sand | Red and pink |
Limestone and quartz sediments | Whitish |
Clay with calcium and silicates | Lavender to purple |
Pure clay or with few additives | Red |
Earth with ferromagnesian | See |
Calcareous sandstones and sulfur mixtures | Golden and even mustard |
For many geologists and experts, it’s quite peculiar that the particles of these earthy sediments have acquired this shape. The delimitation of colors is the main characteristic that also gives a unique beauty to all the mountains in this area. The formation of these colors likely occurred when temperatures varied drastically. Most of these mountains began to be covered in snow, and temperatures surely dropped below zero, halting the passage of minerals. The snow formed an immovable layer that thus maintained the mountains. In other words, in the midst of their formation, it stopped time, and the mountains maintained those characteristic colors.
This is mentioned because some of these mountains were discovered after climate change, which generated drastic temperature variations. Some snow-capped mountains began to abruptly lose their glaciers , making it possible to visualize the shapes of some of the mountains. While this may seem positive, the rapid melting of these places is worrying, as the snow-capped mountains are the main source of water for the high Andean regions throughout Peru and other countries.
How to get there
How to get to Palcoyo Mountain?
The easiest way to get to Palcoyo is to follow the highway that connects Cusco with the route to Arequipa or Puno. This highway leads to the district of Checacupe, from where you can continue your journey toward Pitumarca (others recommend traveling to Combapata, from where you can also find transportation). To get to Palcoyo, it’s essential to reach Pitumarca; otherwise, the journey to this rainbow mountain will likely take longer than usual.
Currently, it is possible to travel with the assistance of a travel agency or on your own. If you choose to travel with a Cusco travel agency, you will only have to pay the full price of the tour. They will provide breakfast, lunch, and essential transportation. Traveling on your own is a perfectly sensible option; it’s less expensive and can be done at your leisure or at the time you want. However, you must be aware of all the necessary requirements to get first to Pitumarca and then to Palcoyo. A necessary factor will be finding transportation.
On the other hand, it’s worth mentioning that the hike is easy to complete. The shuttle will drop us off just 2 kilometers from Palcoyo. This route must be done on foot. The hike isn’t difficult; the first kilometer is uphill, after which it continues on practically flat terrain. The hike isn’t difficult, so it’s recommended to do this route with the whole family. However, acclimatization will be necessary for a better experience, as we’ll see below.
Can you go on your own or just with a tour?
Traveler, I see you want to be prepared for everything. Visiting Palcoyo Mountain doesn’t require a travel agency, but keep in mind that all the logistics will be up to you: transportation, food, and if you want a guide, you’ll also need to book one in advance.
On the other hand, doing it on your own is possible as long as you know the route like the back of your hand. Why? Because you could get lost if you don’t know it well, and you should also be aware that the internet connection isn’t stable throughout the entire route, which could disable the GPS.
Best time to visit
When is the best time to visit Palcoyo?
The best time to visit Palcoyo Mountain is during the dry season, from April to September. During these months, weather conditions are more stable, with little or no rain, making the hike easier and avoiding interference from fog.
Can you visit during the rainy season?
Yes, Palcoyo Mountain is accessible 365 days a year. However, during the rainy season—from October to March—it often rains every day. Also, due to the high altitude, there’s a possibility of thunderstorms, which can be hazardous. It’s important to take precautions if you decide to visit during this time.
Difficulty and walking
How difficult is the hike to Palcoyo?
The hike to Palcoyo Mountain is moderately difficult. Why? Because this place is located at a very high altitude, which presents a challenge for most travelers who come from regions below 1,500 meters above sea level.
Travelers, it’s very important to take into account the need to acclimatize in Cusco city for at least one or two days. This will allow your body to adapt to the altitude. If you take this first step, you’ll most likely avoid altitude sickness during your visit to Palcoyo Mountain.
How long is the hike to the mountain?
Traveler, take note! The route to reach this mountain is quite accessible, as it drops you off near the Palcoyo Mountain viewpoint. From there, it’s only a 30- to 40-minute walk.
Please note that this time is only an estimate. It could take more or less time, depending on your pace. I recommend walking slowly and calmly, as you can easily become agitated. If you push yourself too hard, your body may not receive enough oxygen, which could lead to altitude sickness even if you’ve already acclimatized.
What is the altitude of Palcoyo?
Palcoyo Mountain is located at 4,900 meters above sea level. Scared? Well, yes, it’s quite a high altitude for most travelers, as many come from places located at very low altitudes.
We mentioned above that you must acclimatize in the city of Cusco, which is located at 3,399 meters above sea level, before starting this trip. As you can see, Cusco is also at a high altitude. During this acclimatization period, you may experience altitude sickness, but it’s normal. As the hours pass, the symptoms disappear as your body adapts to the altitude. Once you’re ready, no mountain can defeat you!

To begin, you should keep in mind that, as travelers, our mission is always to travel as light as possible so that the weight of our backpack doesn’t become a hindrance during the trip. Below is a short list of what you’ll need:
- Long-sleeved polo shirt.

What things not to take to the mountains?
Traveler, something very important to keep in mind is to avoid urban or formal clothing at all costs. Why? These garments won’t allow you to move properly, making your steps shorter and more uncomfortable. Plus, there’s a high chance they’ll get damaged.
As for footwear, if it’s urban or formal, keep in mind that it doesn’t have the necessary technology to protect your feet, which could cause friction injuries. By not offering adequate traction or stabilization, you could slip, which could also cause further injuries.
Can you bring food or are there restaurants?
Traveler, if you booked through a travel agency, keep in mind that food is usually included in the tour package, so it won’t be a concern. However, if you’d like something extra, you can pack some small snacks and water in your backpack.
Now, for those visiting this place on their own, it’s important to know that eating is not permitted on Palcoyo Mountain itself. Therefore, if you want to have breakfast or lunch, you must do so on the route leading up the mountain. The most popular spot for this is the town of Cusipata, where you’ll find a variety of restaurants, from simple menus to semi-buffet-style options.
Useful tips
Is it recommended for children or older adults?
Take note! There is no age limit for climbing Palcoyo Mountain. However, it’s very important to take care of the well-being of children and older adults. Why? Because at these stages of life, people are more physically vulnerable, and taking this tour could involve a certain degree of risk.
If you want them to experience this destination, make sure they’re in good health, have an acceptable physical fitness level, and, above all, that they’ve previously acclimatized for at least one to two days in the city of Cusco.
What to do if you experience altitude sickness in Palcoyo?
Traveler, if you experience altitude sickness, it is very important that you immediately inform your tour guide. They will be the first to assist you with any supplies they have on hand, such as a small oxygen tank, or to contact the agency staff to take you back to the transportation, where you will need to rest and take the generic pills available for this type of situation.
Take note! If you’re in Cusco and the symptoms of altitude sickness don’t become unbearable, it’s essential that you see a medical center to avoid complications. If you’re already on the mountain, you’ll most likely be quickly transferred to the nearest medical center.
What is the best time to visit to avoid the crowds?
One thing to keep in mind is that if you’re traveling with a travel agency, the visit to Palcoyo Mountain typically takes place between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. During this time, you may encounter a large crowd of travelers. However, despite this, everyone can enjoy the incredible views, as hiking on the mountains is not permitted.
On the other hand, if you prefer not to run into almost anyone, you can visit on your own before 9 am (although there is a chance of fog) or after 3 pm. Of course, plan your visit very well if you decide to do it outside of normal hours.
