For the trip to Machu Picchu, like any other tourist destination on the planet, identity documents are required. Whether foreign tourists, Peruvian tourists or university students, these documents are necessary to purchase tickets, enter museums, archaeological sites or the airport in Peru itself.

Document for Peruvians
Peruvian citizens must carry their national identity document (DNI) as an essential document to access the different tickets and discounts on the trip to Machu Picchu.
The DNI allows access to discounts at the entrance to Machu Picchu. It also allows you to buy the ‘local train’ from Peru Rail to Machupicchu. Likewise, this document allows you to buy the ‘Cusco Tourist Ticket’ with a discount for Peruvians.
It should be mentioned that not only Peruvian tourists have access to a special discount for the entrance to Machu Picchu. The same happens in the case of visitors from Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia (because they belong to the Andean Community of Nations).
Foreign tourists residing in Peru can access discounts on the trip to Machu Picchu (tickets, train tickets, Cusco Tourist Ticket, etc.). For this, they must have an immigration card in Peru.
No other document outside of the DNI or the immigration card in Peru allows access to discounts for Peruvians on the trip to Machu Picchu.
Document for foreign tourists
Foreign tourists of any nationality must carry their valid passport or national identity document if that is the valid document for their country.
Only citizens of Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia can access a special discount on tickets to Machu Picchu by presenting their passport or national identity document. If the visitor has an immigration card in those countries, they also access these discounts.
Unfortunately tourists from Colombia, Ecuador and Bolivia; nor any visitor from another country can access discounts for the Peru Rail ‘local train’ or the Cusco Tourist Ticket.
Foreign tourists must carry their documents at all times. Keep in mind that showing them is necessary for entering Machu Picchu as well as for registering trains, tours and even hotel reservations.
Document for university students
To access discounts on the trip to Machu Picchu, university students must carry their current university card issued by the corresponding entity in their country.
This ticket must be legible in all its details. The ISIC international student card is not allowed. Library cards or receipts for payments or registration are not allowed either.
The discounts allowed for university students are: entrance to Machu Picchu, Cusco Tourist Ticket and discounts on some tours such as the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
To access the entrance discount to Machu Picchu, the university student must be studying undergraduate studies and be under 25 years old at the time of their visit. Of course, the university card must be valid. If the visitor, in addition to being a university student, is a citizen of Peru, Colombia, Ecuador or Bolivia; then the discount is even higher.
Document for children
Children from any country must have their passport or national identity document according to the document of general use in the country of residence.
On the trip to Machu Picchu children can access discounts on tickets, train tickets, bus and even some tours. For this, your document must legibly show their names and, most importantly, their age.
Children up to 3 years old enter Machu Picchu for free. No reservation is required for this. You only have to show the child’s passport or identity document at the entrance gate to Machupicchu.
In any case, the child must be accompanied by his father, mother or guardian to enter Machu Picchu as well as travel by train, bus or take any tour in Cusco or Machupicchu.
Other documents on the trip to Machu Picchu
When you enter Peru, you will receive the Andean Migration Card (TAM), a document that is stamped when you register your entry into the country. This document can be requested by some of the tourism agencies when required by the Peruvian authorities.
People with special abilities who have a card that qualifies their disability (for example, in Peru the Conadis card) can access some discounts such as bus tickets, tours and more.

All documents must be current and show clearly and legibly the recorded data as well as the photograph.
In case the visitor forgets their passport or identity document, they will not be able to enter Machu Picchu even if they have their ticket. The same in the case of the train or bus trip to Machupicchu. Remember that documents are very important on the trip.
During the purchase of the entrance to Machu Picchu through the internet it is also necessary to show the passport, identity document or university card. How? These documents are sent by email to the tourism agency of your choice.
In case of theft or loss of identity documents while traveling to Peru and Machu Picchu; It is necessary to report it to the Peruvian police station where you are. You will then receive a document that will allow you to continue your journey until you get a new document.
