To visit Machu Picchu on your own, it is necessary to organize your itinerary well. In this aspect, the train trip is essential to arrive on time to the appointment with the ‘Inca city’. Trains leave on time. It is recommended to be at the departure station thirty minutes before. The final station is in the town of Aguas Calientes, located just 10 kilometers from Machupicchu. Daily departures of the train to Machu Picchu
There are two train companies: Peru Rail and Inca Rail. Its trains depart from the different stations of Cusco. The most used by tourists, due to the number of daily departures, is the Ollantaytambo station. However, you can also leave from the San Pedro, Wanchaq, Poroy, Ollantaytambo stations and even the alternative Hydroelectric station.
More than 30 daily departures depart from the Ollantaytambo station, including the local train for Peruvians. Train departures are punctual. At the time of making your purchase, it is recommended to choose the time that best suits the time of your entrance to Machu Picchu.

Peru Rail trains have prices that can vary depending on the schedule or the time of year. On average, these are the prices of the one-way or return ticket:

- Vistadome service: 80 USD.

The local train for Peruvians is a non-tourist service intended only for Peruvian visitors (or foreigners with an immigration card in Peru).
The price for one way or return is only 12 Peruvian soles (approximately 3 dollars).

Train schedules and prices for the train from Hidroeléctrica
6 hours from the city of Cusco, in the jungle part of the region, there is a train station close to a hydroelectric plant. From there Peruvians can board the local train.
The cost of this train for Peruvians is only 5 Peruvian soles (approximately 2 US dollars). Foreign tourists pay approximately 20 dollars. In any case, most people prefer to walk to the final station of Aguas Calientes.
The walk takes 2 hours because only 10 kilometers separates Hidroeléctrica from Aguas Calientes.

Tips for your train trip
The local train also departs from the San Pedro station in the city of Cusco. However, this train is only available for the citizens of Cusco who live in the towns surrounding Machu Picchu.
Hours may vary depending on the time of year. From January 1 to April 30, trains do not depart from the Cusco and Poroy stations. In those months the trains only depart from the Ollantaytambo station.
It is recommended to arrive at each station at least 30 minutes in advance. If you do not arrive on time at the train departure, you will not be able to claim your money back. It is necessary to arrive on time.
Train departure times can only be suspended in case of protests or natural disasters.
